We're back! If you're in the tristate area you know this summer has been crazy hot. For this volume of STWT we're going inside for Ice Cold: An Exhibition of Hip Hop Jewelry on view at the American Museum of Natural History.
This was a super exciting visit because I hadn't been to the new wing of AMNH and as an architecture lover, it is a such a feat. Resembling a rock eroded by wind and water, Studio Gang, a Chicago based firm designed the canyon-esque atrium. Housing the updated Hall of Gems and Minerals where the exhibit was quaintly nestled inside.
Forewarning the exhibition is small, and I mean physically small. While the jewelry is over the top and glistening, the room itself is packed with little room to navigate. I recommend going on an off hour maybe during the week to ensure you can spend ample time without feeling like you need to move on for other guests.
Highlighting hip hop jewelry from the last five decades, you see an evolution of oversized gold chains to pendants of diamonds and platinum. From the rap pioneer's of the 1980s to emcees turned business moguls of the 1990s to today's biggest stars. These iconic pieces are more than jewelry or works of art, but also a status symbol of being at the top of your game. Paying homage to the roots of hip-hop and embracing the style and cultural impact, this exhibit shares with the world the social phenomenon of the past 50 years.
With a mix curated specially for the show, this is definitely hitting a multi-sensory experience. I love how it is juxtaposed with the raw and natural minerals and gems just steps away. Natures work meeting with the craft of the best artisans of our time. I recommend saving Ice Cold for after you tour the hall. It is a cherry on top kind of moment for all that rocks and sparkles.
If there is one thing you need to wear these days it is the Prague Dress. Simply a tank dress in 100% cotton slub jersey, the asymmetrical front hem is giving the cool the weather is not. I love how a slub creates subtle visual interest with the texture of the fibers and has a drier hand than regular jersey.
