As an NYC based brand all of our past STWT have been from local exhibits. For this volume I am mixing it up after having gone to Italy for my dear friends wedding. Of course you have historical works, but after spending some time in Rome it is also fun to see what the contemporary Italian artists of our day are creating.
Presented by DART - Chiostro del Bramante's Emotion is a group show of renowned international artists. If you read our edition 6 with Meta-paintings by Kimsooja, you'll be excited to learn she is a fellow artist on view. I love when you are off discovering a new show and to feel that connection when a favorite artist is there on view, it's like running into a friend. This particular show spans a variety of styles and mediums all connecting to the theme of emotions. With each room and segment of the museum you will see something entirely different than the works before it.
Sinfonia II by Alessandro Sciaraffa is set in a almost pitch black room with a single gong to one side and a reflective screen on the other. The piece comes alive as you enter the space creating a low effort participatory experience. While the frequencies increase as you walk towards the gong, sounds reverb about the space and colors paint the reflective screen, evolving as you move around the room. Part of what I find makes this piece so special is that you become part of the work. In todays world we have become very obsessed with our selves and customization, so I find it so smart that Sciaraffa in a way uses the viewer to create their own experience. Each person will inevitably see and hear their own version all thanks to themselves.
I love the mix of the sciences and art together. Actually they have always been linked to one another like from the onset of creating paint colors. As we advance in technologies artists are challenged even more to create truly one of a kind pieces. Much of Sciaraffa's work focuses on his interests between sound, technology, and nature, and the desire to weave these passions together. From an affinity for the primitive sound of the gong and a fascination with the northern lights, Sciaraffa pushes himself and the possibilities of painting with sound.
For a show about emotions let's talk about what you might feel stepping into this exhibit. I'll be honest at first I was apprehensive. Such a dark room, what did I sign up for. And then like a crash of lightning I felt such excitement, such wonder, and total amazement. Often work that touches emotions we think of it hitting a somber note, something heavy and serious. With this I felt I could feel the tides changes from the onset of uncertainty into an adventure of elation. Reframing the perspective darkness connotes I couldn't help but think poetic this was. As a designer working exclusively in black, this piece felt kismet to see.
Pairing a piece that is casual with something more fancy is a favorite way of mine to hit that day to night sweet spot. Our sandwashed satin items are that perfect element of night-out with a subtle sheen that doesn't overwhelm the day time. So with this look I took our Suez Skirt, a bias midi elastic waist slip skirt with slits on either side and paired it with our Princeton Top, a boxy cropped high neck t-shirt cut in cotton slub jersey. I like how these textures work together balancing one another between depth from the slub and luminosity with the satin.
