IGSHAAN ADAMS

VERKENNING

Volume 31 let's go! This edition I am super excited to share the work of Igshaan Adams presented by Casey Kaplan Gallery. Both the artist and the gallery were new to me and I can't say enough how much I loved the exhibit.

From an unassuming block on 27th street I entered the space and was immediately welcomed by a wall lined trail of pink textile art. At the end of the hall and in the adjoining room are beautiful tapestries made of rope, twine, beads, and chain, woven tightly together yet hanging effortlessly so. And hanging from the ceiling, cloud like forms made of pink metal wire strung with colored glass beads reminds you to always look up.

Growing up in apartheid South Africa, Adams endured an upbringing with limitations and restrictions. Through his hardships he was able to find a light drawing him to celebrate the cultures and traditions of his own identity. Exploring the ideas of suppressed memories, migration paths, and the rhythm of dance, Adams work is more than just what you see at face value.

The pink wall lined trails in their seemingly organic shapes take inspiration from the footpaths carved by individuals and their bravery, defying socio-economic structures. First displayed at ICA Boston, the pieces have since been cut up and reworked into new forms. Adams redefines these updated paths both literally and spiritually nurturing new traverse lines and encouraging a better tomorrow.

With the help of the Garage Dance Ensemble, each one of the tapestries takes its name from a dancer. Before Adams begins, a dancer moves back and forth over the wrong side of a plastic covered canvas leaving behind the gestures from their footprints. Using these marks as a map for the tapestries designs creates a unique layout born from the pain of memories and the freedom of movement.

It's summer and you know I love to keep it simple this time of year. Layering clothes is not for city life when it is so hot outside. The Seville Dress is perfect for throwing on one piece and still looking put together. Cut in our signature sand-washed satin, it'll have you easily go from day to night. With short sleeves and hitting at mini length, this cocoon shaped tunic gives great movement with the deep pleated back V neck.

And since layering clothes is not the move for this hot season, layering jewelry is my go-to for creating visual interest in your look. Pair a mix of textures whether it is different metals or raw stones, and keep the lengths in mind to form a cohesive group of variation. When it comes to shoes an ankle boot is basically a city girls sandal. I like to have the sock peek over the top to blend that line from leg to shoe. Such a rainy year but I always have some sunnies on hand just in case and rocked the Paris bag!

Igshanna Adams Verkenning on view till July 25th, go check it out and let me know what you think.
