POWER CLASH

Wow Volume 30 here we are! This edition I had such a fun time gallery hopping with my dear friend Meredith around Tribeca in Lower Manhattan.

Our plans were focused on another show which has since closed but not to fear our day of art led us to R & Company where there was a visual feast for our eyes.

Upon entering there was a mix of Rococo meets Neo-Industrial work with a monkey affinity on view. It definitely caught my attention and was very much my personal style but at the same time it didn't excite me. Stepping deeper into the gallery I found Ngo's pieces, a mix of art and furniture with a flair of whimsy. Immediately I was intrigued by the amorphous shapes and organically undulating lines. It was like Louis Comfort Tiffany and Willy Wonka had a collaboration.

Power Clash is an exploration of Ngo's Santa Barbara roots and Vietnamese heritage where topographical similarities between the California hills and layers of rice paddies inform such structural individualism. Juxtaposing not just geography but also mediums, there is a mix of 3d printed vessels with a variety of hand painting techniques. Starting from clay extrusion, the introduction of plastic expands Ngo's practical artistic repertoire to include lighting and mirrors.

Whether she is embracing the use of technology or finding the details in more traditional modes, Ngo is letting her creative process drive. The ongoing mixing of ideas is ever present in her work. From bronze bell adornments rooted in South Asian design to nods of cherub forms, we can feel the sense of play and freedom about the pieces. Ngo's willingness to bring unlike elements together is a testament to the beauty of sharing culture.

Sometimes you want to grab the easy shirt from the pile and sometimes you want to dress up a little more. The Porto Top answers both of these feelings for me. In sandwashed satin you have that perfect mix of sheen but not too shiny to go from day to night. With the boxy shape and asymmetrical front hem there is intentional design with ease of movement. Anytime I wear this I feel styled and relaxed. Pairing the Porto with our Sofia Skirt, it basically becomes a set being in the same fabric and grain line. A classic mini skirt with an A-line shape creates a visual balance with slimming fullness around the mid-thigh.

Lately I am walking out the door with rain on the brain. I grabbed a trusty cotton trench coat that hits just after the skirt hem but before the boots start. Giving some space for the pieces to breath breaks up the looks to feel lighter especially in the warmer seasons. As a New Yorker boots are always the way to go, I just can't walk for miles in a sandal. I love a wedge, it keeps me grounded but I still get some height. Layering up with different short chunky silver chains keeps the look polished but not weighed down. Sunnies if you're so lucky and of course the Paris bag!

Jolie Ngo's Power Clash on view till August 15th, go check it out and let me know what you think.
