TARA DONOVAN

STRATAGEMS

Volume 11 of STWT here we are! I just wanted to say thank you for following along. I hope you are enjoying this newsletter. It is such a treat for me to candidly write about art and fashion.

On this edition I headed to Pace Gallery on 25th Street. This location is actually their global headquarters and you can certainly feel the magnitude this building holds when you step inside. There are several exhibits going on throughout the different floors. For today I will focus just on the seventh floor to see the work of Tara Donovan's Stratagems.

The seventh floor is a wonder. It has floor to ceiling windows and you are smothered with skyscrapers for as far as the eyes can see. One thing I loved about this exhibit is that it was held on this floor. Stratagems' plinth like sculptures of upcycled found CD-ROM discs are perfectly juxtaposed against the skyline of Manhattan's architecture.

Donovan is known for her work with everyday objects creating a sense of nostalgia through human perception. This exhibits really hits that feeling especially if you are born before lets say 1998. I am sure many of you can relate to a pile of cds laying about but how many have made wondrously artistic sculptures with them. It is really magnificent and gives a whole new vision to these obsolete objects.

Spiraling in different tessellating three dimensional patterns, the light just bounces all around the space from these refractive discs. With a deep interest in perceptual nuance and transformation, Donovan has breathed new life into these outdated materials. As you walk around the work you can't help but self reflect. Remember when these discs were our main source of entertainment. I immediately thought of the time I bought the Best of Nirvana CD at the Rock and Roll Music Hall of Fame and played it nonstop in my car. Art is really special when you like looking at and also like where your mind wanders when you look at it.

Yes we are still having a heatwave in NYC but these cotton viscose pieces will be a life saver. The Palermo top features faux-leather shoulder straps with silver hook and ring hardware for a little detail. The shirt is a similar cut to our Siena but is lengthened to hit mid thigh with a high side slit to the waist. I love pairing it with the Panjin shorts as they are the same fabric. The shorts have an elastic waistband hitting right around the hip, and of course with pockets.

Keeping it simple all summer long. I think the best way to make an outfit feel complete without having to layer on the accessories is to add a strong shoe. I'm really into a wedge bootie with slim upper so it doesn't feel to heavy with the rest of the outfit. I love wearing a delicate choker necklace, it is subtle and super lightweight. And of course, got to have sunnies and our Paris Bag!

Tara Donovan Stratagems on view till August 16th, go check it out and let me know what you think.
